Product information
Cleaning: Due to the copper content within brass, brass items will naturally oxidise and discolour over time due to exposure to moisture and oxygen within the atmosphere. Therefore we recommended to clean your masala dubba with vinegar rather than water. Cleaning with water can quicken discolouration and leave green-blueish marks around the edges, where moisture tends to sit and collect.
Discolouration: Brass items can develop a blueish green discolouration over time called a “patina”. To remove the patina there are two main methods:
- The first method is by using a product named flitz which is FDA certified. This is a strong metal cleaner which can be rubbed on to the affected area and rinsed with water afterwards. Be careful to not let this sit on the brass work as it may eat away at the metal. Dry thoroughly afterwards with a towel to prevent further discolouration.
- The second method is by using a flour, salt and vinegar solution. Combine Salt and Vinegar in a medium-sized bowl, add 1 tsp. salt to 1/2 cup vinegar. Stir the mixture until the salt dissolves. Add 2 Tbsp. of flour to the salt and vinegar mixture to make a paste. Rub the paste onto your brass object using a dish scrubber or a toothbrush and let it dry for 10 minutes. Rinse, wipe clean, and thoroughly dry the brass with a clean cloth.
After both aforementioned cleaning methods, we recommend applying a thin coat of coconut oil to your entire masala dubbah to protect it from the surrounding environment and delay the patina effect.
