Matar Paneer is a classic North Indian dish that combines tender paneer (Indian cottage cheese) with green peas in a rich and flavourful tomato-based gravy. This hearty and comforting dish is a staple in Indian households and often enjoyed with naan, roti, or Basmati rice. Known for its creamy texture and aromatic spices, Matar Paneer is easy to prepare yet packed with restaurant-style flavours.

Ingredients
500g Paneer, cut into cubes
3 tbsp Oil
2 Onions, diced
1 tbsp Ginger Paste
1 tbsp Garlic Paste
1 tsp Cumin Powder
1 tsp Coriander Powder
1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder
1 tsp Chilli Powder
400g Plum Tomatoes, from a tin (pureed)
Pinch Sugar
Salt
250g Water
200g frozen Peas
1 tsp Garam Masala Powder
Instructions
Heat Oil in a pot over medium high heat.Â
Add Onions and cook until golden brown. Around 10 minutes.
Stir in Ginger and Garlic and saute for 1 minute.
Stir in Cumin Powder, Coriander Powder, Turmeric Powder and Chilli Powder. Cook for 1 minute. Add a splash of Water if needed.
Pour in Tomatoes. Cook on medium heat for 8 - 10 minutes.
Add Salt, Water and Sugar.
Simmer on low heat with the heat on for 5 minutes.
Add Peas, Garam Masala Powder and Paneer. Cook for 5 - 7 minutes on medium high heat.
Variations
You can shallow fry the Paneer for 2 minutes before adding them to the Curry.
How to Serve
Serve with Roti/Chapatti, Naan, Paratha or basmati Rice.
Storage
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
To freeze, cool to room temperature and place in a freezer-safe airtight container and freeze for up to 1 month.
Thaw overnight in the fridge and reheat with a splash of water over medium heat until warmed through.Â
